The "Usuge-kuromoji" (Lindera sericea var. glabrata) belongs to Lauraceae (the Laurel family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It is a variety of "Ke-kuromoji" and grows up to 3 m high in mountainous areas. The leaves are obovate to oblong and alternate, with no short hairs on the surface, and the underside is initially covered with silky hairs. The veins are markedly raised on the underside. Around April, when the leaves develop, an inflorescence is produced and small yellow-green flowers bloom. There are 6 perianth segments, and the peduncle and stipe are hairy.
