わが国の本州、長野・山梨県以西と四国の徳島県に分布しています。山地の林縁や岩陰などに生え、高さは１〜２メートルほどになります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で枝先に集まってつきます。４月から６月ごろ、枝先に淡い黄緑白色の花を下垂して咲かせますが、花冠の先端は浅く５裂します。花柄や萼の縁には腺毛が生えます。別名で、「つりがねつつじ（釣鐘躑躅）」とも呼ばれます。

ツツジ科ヨウラクツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Menziesia cilicalix。英名はありません。

"Usugi-youraku" (Menziesia cilicalix) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native westward from Nagano-Yamanashi Prefecture of Honshu and Tokushima prefecture of Shikoku of Japan. This tree grows in montane woodland margines or rock shades and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and crowd at the end of twigs. The pale yellow-greenish white, drooping flowers come in the twig apices from April to June. The tip of corolla is quintuple-lobate. The peduncles and the edge of calyces have glandular hairs.
