わが国の本州から四国・九州それに中国に分布しています。山地の砂礫地などに生え、高さは２５〜５０センチになります。葉は披針形で互生し、全縁です。７月から８月ごろ、茎頂の白い苞葉のなかに、小さな灰白色の頭花を咲かせます。総苞は釣り鐘状で、総苞片は３列つきます。和名は、淡白色の苞葉を薄く積もった雪に喩えたもの。中国名では「薄雪火绒草（bao xue huo rong cao）」と呼ばれます。

キク科ウスユキソウ属の多年草で、学名は Leontopodium japonicum。英名はありません。

The "Usuyuki-so" (Leontopodium japonicum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan and China. This herb grows in mountane screes and can reach 25-50 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate, alternate and entire. The small grayish-white flower-heads appear on the white bracts of stem apices from July to August. The bracts are bell-shaped and the phyllaries are arranged in triple rows. The Japanese name refers to the light-white bract leaves, which are a metaphor for a thin layer of snow. The Chinese name is "薄雪火绒草" (bao xue huo rong cao).
