ウツボカズラ属は、熱帯アジアを中心に１２０種ほどが分布しています。熱帯雨林の林内や湿地などに生え、つる性で他の植物に絡みついてよじ登ります。代表的な食虫植物で、葉（偽葉）の先端が長く伸びて壺状の捕虫器をつけます。葉は楕円形で、平行脈があります。小さな地味な花を、つるの先端の総状花序に咲かせます。雌雄異株です。

ウツボカズラ科ウツボカズラ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Nepenthes (属の総称)。英名は Tropical pitcher plant、Monkey cups。

The Tropical pitcher plant (Nepenthes) belongs to Nepenthaceae (the Nepenthes family). It is a genus of about 120 species of evergreen perennial herb that is mainly distributed in tropical Asia. This herb grows in tropical rainforests or marshes, and climbs up adjacent other plants. This is a typical carnivorous plant, and the tip of phylode (pseudo-leaf) elongates forming pitcher-shaped insect collector. The phylodes are elliptic with parallel veins. The small somber flowers come in terminal racemes. It is dioecious.
