わが国の本州、滋賀県湖南市にある標高２２７メートルの美松山（びしょうざん）にだけ自生しています。「あかまつ」の一品種で、国の天然記念物にも指定され、根元から多くの幹がほうき状に分枝するのが特徴です。葉は柔らかく、傘状の樹冠を形成します。江戸時代、東海道の名所のひとつになっていたといいます。写真中７〜９・下は、中津万象園にある樹齢６００年の「千代の傘松」。

マツ科マツ属の常緑高木で、学名は Pinus densiflora f. umbraculifera。英名はありません。

"Utsukushi-matsu" (Pinus densiflora f. umbraculifera) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is a form of Japanese red pine. This tree grows only in Mt. Bishozan, 227 m above sea level, located in Konan City, Shiga Prefecture. It is also designated as a natural monument of the country, it is characterized by many branches spreading broom-like from the root. The leaves are soft and form an umbrella-like crown. It is said that it was one of the sights of Tokaido during the Edo period. The 8th or less photos are the 600-year-old "Chiyono karamatsu" in Nakatsu-bansho Garden.
