セイシェル諸島が原産です。標高３００〜６００メートルの山間や丘陵に生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。一属一種で、熱帯または亜熱帯の気候を好みます。茎や葉柄には棘があり、支柱根に支えられています。大きな葉は２．５メートルの長さになり、小葉が分離していません。

ヤシ科ウェルスカフェルティア属の常緑高木で、学名は Verschaffeltia splendida。英名は Latanier latte、Seychelles stilt palm。

The Latanier latte (Verschaffeltia splendida) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the Seychelles Islands. It grows on mountains and hills between 300 and 600 m above sea level and can grow up to 20 m tall. It is the sole species in the genus and prefers tropical or subtropical climates. The stems and petioles have spines and are supported by prop roots. The large leaves are 2.5 m long and the leaflets are not separated.
