ヨーロッパからカスピ海沿岸および北アフリカに分布しています。沼沢地や湿地などに生え、茎は水中を漂うか、地面を匍匐して、長さは１０〜５０センチになります。節ごとに根をだします。葉は直径３〜５センチの楯形葉で円形です。７月から１０月ごろ、散形花序をだし、ごく小さな緑白色の花を咲かせます。和名は、流通名で和製英語です。

The Water pennywort (Hydrocotyle vulgaris) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Europe to the Caspian Sea coast and North Africa. It grows in swamps and marshes, and its stems drift in the water or creep along the ground, reaching 10 to 50 cm in length. Roots are produced at each node. The leaves are circular with shield-shaped lobes 3-5 cm in diameter. It produces umbels with small greenish-white flowers from July to October. The Japanese name "Water mushroom" is a trade name and is a Japanese-English word.
