The western burnish bush (Euonymus occidentalis) belongs to Celastraceae (the Bittersweet family). It is a small deciduous tree that is western North America; from British Columbia to California. This tree can reach 2-6 m in height. The leaves are thin, green, ovate with acute tips, and arranged in opposite. The pink to brown, five-petaled flowers bloom from May to June. The fruits are round capsules with three bulging lobes. They open to reveal seeds which covered with red arils.
