アフリカ西部の熱帯地方が原産です。幹は直立し、高さは１．２〜１．８メートルになります。光沢のある濃緑色の葉は楕円形で互生します。温度さえあればほとんど一年中、葉腋から総状花序をだし、白色の筒状花を咲かせます。花冠の先端は４〜５裂し、平開します。別名で「ホワイトキャンドル」とも呼ばれます。

キツネノマゴ科ルイラソウ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Whitfieldia elongata（syn. Ruellia longiflora）。英名は White candles。

The White candles (Whitfieldia elongata) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Acanthus family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to the tropics of western Africa. The trunk is erect and grows 1.2 to 1.8 m tall. The glossy dark green leaves are elliptic and alternate. It produces racemes from the leaf axils and produces white tubular flowers almost all year round as long as the temperature is warm enough. The corolla is flattened with 4 or 5 lobes at the tip.
