インドから東南アジア、オーストラリア北東部に分布しています。高さは１５〜２０メートルほどになります。枝は細くて先端が垂れ下がり、長楕円形から長卵形の葉は互生します。長い花柄の先に細長い花弁の花を咲かせます。咲き始めは淡い緑色ですが、しだいに黄色に変わります。この濃厚な甘い香りのある花は、イランイラン香水の原料となります。「イランイラン」とはタガログ語で、「花の中の花」の意味だそうです。

バンレイシ科カナンガ属の常緑高木で、学名は Cananga odorata。英名は Ylang-ylang、Ilang-ilang、Alang-ilang。

The ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) belongs to Annonaceae (the Custard apple family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from India to Southeas Asia and northeastern Australia. This tree can reach 15-20 m in height. The branches are slender and drooping. The leaves are oblong to long-ovate and alternate. The flowers have long and thin petals and borne on the long peduncles. They are pale green at beginning and turn yellow gradually. They have strong odor and used for the raw material of perfume. "Ilang-Ilang" means "flower of flowers" in Tagalog.
