南アフリカの西ケープ州、ケープ半島から東へ、スウェレンダムまで分布しています。湿潤な粘土質または礫質の草地に生え、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。球茎から剣形の葉をだします。８月から１０月ごろ（わが国では４月から５月ごろ）、茎頂の穂状花序に青色から紫色の花を咲かせます。属名はオランダ語の「ヒヒ（狒々）」に由来し、この球根が「ヒヒ」の大好物だからといいます。

アヤメ科ホザキアヤメ属の多年草で、学名は Babiana nervosa (syn. Babiana stricta)。英名は Baboon flower。

The Baboon flower (Babiana nervosa) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Cape Peninsula eastward to Swellendam in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It grows in moist clay or gravelly grasslands, reaching heights of 15 to 30 cm. Sword-shaped leaves emerge from the bulb. From August to October (In Japan, around April to May), blue to purple flowers bloom on a spike-like inflorescence at the stem apex. The genus name derives from the Dutch word "bavian" (baboon), as this bulb is a favorite food of baboons.
