The Baboon flower (Babiana stricta) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Cape region of South Africa. It is closely related to and resembles the "freesia". It is tolerant of cold and produces a profusion of purple flowers at the tips of its flower stalks from April to May. The genus name is derived from the Dutch word "babianer," because this bulb is a favorite food of the baboon.
