The native habitat of the babiana is South Africa. It grows wild primarily in the arid regions of the Western Cape and Namakaland, as well as in sandy coastal areas. Although this specimen has not been formally identified at the Tsukuba Botanical Gardens, it closely resembles Babiana patula.

The Babiana patula belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Tulbagh to Albertinia in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. It grows on clay-rich flatlands and gentle slopes, reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm. It produces hairy, fringed leaves and short stems from its bulb. From August to September, it blooms with flowers ranging from pale purple to blue, often featuring yellow markings. Alternatively, the flowers may be entirely yellow or white. It is characterized by its intensely strong fragrance.
