The Coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Washington State to California in the United States, and Baja California in Mexico. It grows on coastal cliffs, grasslands and hillsides and is up to 3 m tall. The stems are erect or creeping on the ground, with spreading branches. The leaves are oblanceolate to obovate, serrated and conspicuously 3-veined. It is dioecious, with head flowers in leafy panicles from August to November. The flower heads are composed of several florets, the male flowers yellowish and the female flowers white and fluffy. Involucral scales are hemispherical to bell-shaped.
