The Hairyseed bahia (Bahia absinthifolia) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in the southwestern United States, from Arizona to New Mexico and Texas. It grows in open shrubbery, rocky areas, and along roadsides, and grows to a height of around 40 cm. The stem is upright and often branched. The leaves are highly variable, and can be lanceolate with entire or serrated margins, or ternately divided with linear to oblong lobes. From spring to fall, it produces yellow flower heads at the tips of its branches. The flower heads are around 5 cm in diameter and have around 13 ray florets and more than 80 tubular flowers. The specific epithet is a compound word made up of the Greek word "apsinthion" (absinthe, wormwood) and the Latin word "folium" (leaf).
