メキシコ南部からブラジル南部が原産です。成長が早く、高さは１５〜３０メートルになります。葉は広卵形から掌状で、３〜７浅裂します。雨季の終わりごろ、白色から黄白色の筒状花を咲かせます。幹は木目が粗く、非常に軽くて軟らかい材木になります。名前は、スペイン語で「筏」のことです。

パンヤ科バルサ属の常緑または落葉高木で、学名は Ochroma lagopus (syn. Ochroma pyramidale)。英名は Balsa。

The Balsa (Ochroma lagopus) belongs to the family Bombacaceae. It is a tall evergreen or deciduous tree that is native from southern Mexico to southern Brazil. It grows quickly, reaching a height of 15 to 30 m. The leaves are broadly ovate to palmate with 3 to 7 shallow lobes. White to yellowish-white tubular flowers bloom at the end of the rainy season. The trunk is coarse-grained and makes very light, soft timber. Its name is Spanish for "raft".
