The "Baika-ohren" (Coptis quinquefolia) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from Fukushima prefecture to the Ki-i Peninsula, the Pacific Ocean Side of Honshu, Shikoku of Japan and Taiwan. This herb grows in montane forests or woodland margins and it can reach 10-15 cm in height. The leaves are basal, petiolated and palmately compound with 5 leaflets. The Japanese apricot-like, white flowers come in March to May. The sepals look like petals.
