The Philippine violet (Barleria cristata) belongs to Acanthaceae (the Ruellia family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native from Southern China to Burma and India. This shrub can reach 1.2-1.8 m in height. The leaves are elliptic to narrowly ovate, and arranged in opposite. The spikes are borne throughout most of the year, and bloom funnel-shaped, pale bluish flowers. There are white, pink or orange-colored cultivars. The fruits are elliptic capsules about 1.5 cm long. In Chinese, it is called "假杜鵑" (jia du juan).
