香港が原産ですが、熱帯地域で広く栽培されています。高さは６メートルくらいになり、枝が枝垂れます。葉は心臓形で光沢があり、先端が蹄のように分かれています。９月から３月ごろにかけて、紫紅色の花を咲かせます。香港特別行政区の紋章にもデザインされています。別名で「ホンコンオーキッドツリー」とも呼ばれます。

マメ科ハカマカズラ属の落葉高木で、学名は Bauhinia blakeana。英名は Hong Kong orchid tree。

Hong Kong orchid tree (Bauhinia blakeana) belongs to the Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to Hong Kong, and cultivated widely in tropical areas. The height is about 6 m, the branches can be weeped. The leaves are heart-shaped and shiny, with the tip divided like a hooves. The purplish red flowers will bloom from September to March. It is also designed for the emblem of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. Another name is also called "Hong Kong Orchid Tree".
