カナダのブリッティッシュコロンビア州から南にアメリカ・カリフォルニア州中部、それに東にはアイダホ・モンタナ州に分布しています。乾燥した明るい森や伐採地に生え、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。葉は非常に狭い線形で、根生します。５月から８月ごろ、丈夫な茎頂に、白色のごく小さい花をいっぱい咲かせます。花披には６個の花弁に似た花被片、雄しべそれに３つに曲がった花柱があります。アメリカ先住民は、この葉を編んで衣服やバスケットにしたり、根は焼いて食用にしていました。

ユリ科クセロフィルム属の多年草で、学名は Xerophyllum tenax。
英名は Bear grass、Indian basket grass。

Bear grass (Xerophyllum tenax) belongs to the family Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to British Columbia south to central California and east to Idaho and Montana. This herb grows in dry open woods and clearings, and it can reach about 1.5 m in height. The leaves are very narrow linear and basal. The many white tiny flowers bloom in a dense raceme atop a stout stalk from May to August. The perianth has six petal-like segments, six stamens, the three curved styles. Native Americans used the leaves to weave garments and baskets and ate the roasted rootstock.
