メキシコからグアテマラが原産です。よく分枝して、高さは３０〜５０センチほどになります。茎には毛が生え、葉は卵状披針形で対生します。夏から秋にかけて、花を咲かせます。花弁はなく、赤色で先端が紫黒色の筒状の萼があります。別名で「たばこそう（煙草草）」とも呼ばれます。

ミソハギ科クフェア属の常緑小低木で、学名は Cuphea ignea。英名は Cigar plant、Cigar flower。

The cigar plant (Cuphea ignea) belongs to Lythraceae (the Loosestrife family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Mexico and Guatemala. This shrub are much branched and it can reach 30-50 cm in height. The stems are pubescent. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate and opposite. The flowers bloom in summer and fall. The flowers are non-petaled and have red with purple-black tip, tubular sepals.
