The Malabar ebony (Diospyros malabarica) belongs to Ebenaceae (the Ebony family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed from India to Bangladesh and Southeast Asia. It grows in lowland tropical rainforests, especially along rivers, and reaches a height of 20 to 35 m. It is well branched and has a dense canopy. The bark is smooth, almost black with a greenish tinge. The leaves are oblong, leathery, shiny, and alternate, and the dirty yellow flowers bloom from May to June. The fruits are ovoid, 4-6 cm in diameter, and ripen to yellow from March to April of the following year. The fruit is edible, but it is said to retain much astringency. The bark, leaves, flowers, and fruits are used medicinally in Ayurvedic medicine. The wood is also used for construction and furniture.
