熱帯メキシコが原産です。熱帯林の木陰にある林床に生え、高さは２５センチ以上になります。無茎植物で、分枝した根茎を這わせて広がります。葉は心形で濃い鮮緑色、黒い縁取りがあります。また紫がかった赤ワイン色からほとんど黒色に近い模様が、葉脈に沿って帯状に形成されます。冬の終わりから早春にかけて、白色または淡いピンク色の雄花と雌花を、緩やかな花序につけます。花は小さく、貝殻の形をしていて、１０〜１５センチの長い花柄のうえにつきます。

シュウカイドウ科シュウカイドウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Begonia bowerae (syn. Begonia bowerae var. nigramarga)。英名は Eyelash begonia。

The eyelash begonia (Begonia bowerae) belongs to Begoniaceae (the Begonia family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to tropical Mexico. This herb grows on the shadowy floor of the tropical forests and grows up to 25 cm in height. It is a stemless plant and spreads by creeping branched rhizomes. The leaves are heart shaped and deep emerald green with black edging. They have stiff hairs on leaf edges and leaf stalk. The purple-burgundy to nearly black markings may also create bands along the leaf veins. It produces loose clusters of white or light pink male and female flowers in late winter and early spring. The flowers are tiny, shell-shaped, produced on 10-15 cm long stalks.
