メキシコ南部からホンジュラスが原産です。根茎ベゴニアの一種で、高さは１５〜３０センチになります。葉は掌状複葉で、光沢のあり鋸歯のある小葉が７〜１０個つきます。葉の裏面はえび茶色です。丈夫な花茎の上の花序に、緑がかった色の花を咲かせます。１８９５年、スイスの植物学者であるカシミール・ピラミュ・ドゥ・カンドールによって記載されました。

シュウカイドウ科シュウカイドウ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Begonia thiemei。英名は Palm-leaf begonia。

The palm-leaf begonia (Begonia thiemei) belongs to Begoniaceae (the Begonia family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native from southern Mexico to Honduras. It is a rhizomatous begonia and can reach 15-30 cm in height. The leaves are palmately compound with 7-10 glossy serrated leaflets. The leaf undersides are maroon. The greenish hued flowers bloom in clusters upon heavy stalks. It was described in 1895 by Swiss botanist, Casimir Pyrame de Candolle.
