中国の南部から東南アジアに分布している「ほうらいちく」の変種、「ほうおうちく」の一品種です。桿の高さは２〜３メートルほどで、株立ち状になります。桿や枝は、黄色の地に緑色の縞がはいるのが特徴です。名前のように紅色の縞が入るものもあります。

イネ科ホウライチク属のタケ類で、学名は Bambusa multiplex var. elegans f. viridi-striata。英名は Fern-leaf hedge bamboo。

The Fern-leaf hedge bamboo (Bambusa multiplex var. elegans f. viridi-striata) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bamboo that is a form of the fern-leaf hedge bamboo (Bambusa multiplex var. elegans), which is a varity of the hedge bamboo (Bambusa multiplex) that is distributed to southern China and the South-east Asia. The culms are bushy, and can reach 2-3 m in height. It is characterised by the fact that the culms and branches have green stripes on a yellowish ground. The red-striped type can be found sometimes.
