わが国の固有種で、本州の中部地方以北の日本海側から北海道の西南部に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の林縁や渓流沿いに生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルほどになります。葉は３出複葉で互生し、縁には欠刻状の重鋸歯があります。６月から７月ごろ、濃紅色の花を下向きに咲かせます。果実は赤く熟しますが、渋みが強く美味しくないそうです。

バラ科キイチゴ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rubus vernus。英名はありません。

"Benibana-ichigo" (Rubus vernus) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan and is distributed northward from the Japan Sea side of Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. This herb grows in the forest edges and along mountain streams of the subalpine to alpine zone, and the height is about 1-1.5 meters. The leaves are trifoliates, alternate, and with indented duplicato-serratus edges. The deep red flower blooms downward from June to July. The fruits ripen red, but they are astringent and not delicious.
