メキシコからキューバ、パナマが原産です。わが国へは明治時代のはじめに渡来しました。高さは２メートルくらいになります。夏を中心に長期間、枝先の集散花序に芳香のある橙赤色の花を咲かせます。和名は、紅色の「まつりか（茉莉花）」に似た花ということから。

アカネ科ベニマツリ属の常緑低木で、学名は Rondeletia odorata。英名はありません。

The Rondeletia odorata belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native from Mexico to Cuba and Panama. It was introduced into Japan at the beginning of the Meiji era (1868-1912). This tree grows a height of about 2 m. For a long period centered around summer, fragrant orange-red flowers bloom in the cyme of branches. The Japanese name is derived from a flower similar to the red Arabian jasmine (Jasminum sambac).
