The Devil wood (Osmanthus armatus) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in central China, from Shaanxi to Sichuan, Hubei and Hunan provinces. It grows in rocky gravelly areas in the mountains and grows 2-6 m tall. The leaves are lanceolate-elliptic with pointed tips, and the edges are covered with stiff, pointed, prickly teeth. However, mature leaves are often entire, with no teeth at all. In fall, small, fragrant, white flowers bloom in leaf axils in inflorescences. In Chinese, it is called "紅柄木犀" (hong bing mu xi).
The 1st and 2nd photos show the garden variety 'Jim Porter'. The variety was accidentally discovered by Jim Porter in South Carolina, the United States. It is columnar when young and becomes narrow pyramidal with age. The bottom is 'Carl Wheeler'.
