アメリカ南西部、カリフォルニア州南東部からアリゾナ州南部、それにメキシコ南西部に分布しています。砂漠や乾燥した砂礫地に生え、高さは１２メートルにもなります。西部劇でよく登場するサボテンです。茎は滑らかな蝋質で、５センチほどの棘がリブの上に生えています。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に黄白色の花を咲かせます。咲くのは涼しい夜で、蝙蝠よって媒介されます。アメリカ先住民の人々は、果実を食用に、茎の芯はテントの用材に利用しました。寿命は２００年ほどあるといいます。

サボテン科カルネギエア属の柱サボテンで、学名は Carnegiea gigantea。英名は Saguaro、Saguaro cactus。

The saguaro (Carnegiea gigantea) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a columnar cactus that is native to the southwestern United States; southeastern California to southern Arizona, and southwestern Mexico. This herb grows in desert and arid screes, and it can reach about 12 m in height. This cactus often comes on to western movies. The stems are smooth and waxy with spines, about 5 cm long on the ribs. The yellowish white flowers bloom atop of the stems in May to June. They bloom only in the cool evening and are pollinated by bats. The fruits were used as a food and the stem cores were used for tent poles by the native Americans. The lifespan of this plant is about 200 years.
