わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは２〜４メートルになります。葉は倒披針形から狭倒卵形で、縁には細かい鋸歯があり、枝先に集まってつきます。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に総状花序をだし、釣鐘形の花を下向きに咲かせます。花冠は淡紅色から紅色で、先端は浅く５裂し、さらに細かく分裂します。秩父地方に多いことから、別名で「ちちぶどうだん（秩父灯台）」とも呼ばれます。

ツツジ科ドウダンツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Enkianthus cernuus f. rubens。英名はありません。

"Beni-doudan" (Enkianthus cernuus f. rubens) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed westward from Kanto district on Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in montane woodlands and can reach 2-4 m in height. The leaves are oblanceolate to narrow obovate with fine toothed edges, and crowed at the terminal twigs. The racemes are borne on the terminal branches and produce bell-shaped flowers descending from May to June. The corolla is pale rose-pink to deep rose-pink, quintuple-lobate shallowly and divided into fine lobes further at the tips.
