The Autumn fern (Dryopteris erythrosora) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is native from Iwate-Yamagata prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan. This fern grows usually in low mountain forests and roadsides, and can reach 50-120 cm in height. The pinnae are lobed. The new shoots are tinged magenta in spring. The sori on the abaxial sides are also bright magenta when young. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "紅蓋鱗毛蕨" (red lid scale hairy bracken).
