インドおよび東南アジア、オーストラリアの北部に分布しています。広い樹冠を形成し、自生地では１５〜２０メートルの高さになります。幼木のころは半日陰に育ち、着生しますが、成長すると宿主を覆い隠してしまいます。枝がよく分枝して、垂れ下がるのが特徴です。和名では「しだれがじゅまる」、別名で「ベンジャミンゴムのき」とも呼ばれます。写真中２は、斑入りの園芸品種「スターライト（cv. Star Light）」。

クワ科イチジク属の常緑高木で、学名は Ficus benjamina。英名は Benjamin tree、Weeping fig。

The Benjamin tree (Ficus benjamina) belongs to Moraceae (the Mulberry family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is found in India and Southeast Asia and northern Australia. It forms a broad canopy, reaching 15 to 20 m tall in its native habitat. As a young tree, it grows in semi-shade and is epiphytic, but as it grows it overshadows its host. It is characterized by its well branched and drooping branches. It is also called "Shidare-gajumaru" and "Benjamin gum tree" in Japan. The 3rd photo shows the spotted garden variety 'Star Light'.
