The Berberis pruinosa belongs to Berberidaceae (the Berberry family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to central-southern China; westward from Guangxi to Guizhou, Shchuan, Yunnan and Tibet. This tree can reach about 5 m in height. The leaves are oblong and alternate with spiny toothed edges. The branches have small spines. The yellow flowers bloom from April to May. The fruits are berries and ripen blue-black in fall. In Chinese, it is called "•²—t¬Ÿ@" (fen ye xiao bo).
