The Purple bergenia (Bergenia purpurascens) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from central Himalayas to northern Burma and southern China. It grows in subalpine forests, grasslands, and rocky areas, reaching a height of 15 to 50 cm. The leaves are obovate to elliptic, leathery, with wavy serrated or entire margins. From May to October, it extends its scape and blooms purple flowers in umbels at the tips.It is characterized by its darker flower color and longer scapes than other Himalayan creeping saxifrage. In Chinese, it is called "岩白菜" (yan bai cai).
