The Guangdong star anise (Illicium lanceolatum) belongs to the family Illiciaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed in southeastern China. It grows in mountainous areas. It grows 8 to 10 m high. The bark is grayish brown. The leaves are oblanceolate, leathery, with pointed tips, entire, and alternate. The fruits are follicle-shaped and resemble the octagonal shape of "Star anise" (Illicium verum). Essential oil is extracted from the fruit and leaves, giving off a strong fragrance. The root and root bark are toxic, but are used medicinally in China. In Chinese, it is called "紅毒茴" (hong du hui).
