わが国の本州、関東地方から中部地方に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは１．５〜２メートルになります。枝はよく分枝します。葉は広卵形から長楕円状卵形で粗い鋸歯があり、対生します。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に濃紅色から淡紅色の花を咲かせます。花冠は二唇形で、上唇は２裂、下唇は３裂し、下唇の内側には橙色の網状紋があります。

スイカズラ科ツクバネウツギ属の落葉低木で、学名は Abelia spathulata var. sanguinea。英名はありません。

"Benibanano-tsukubane-utsugi" (Abelia spathulata var. sanguinea) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Kanto and Chubu district of Honshu, Japan. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 1.5-2 m in height. The branches are much-branched. The leaves are broad ovate to oblong-ovate with coarsely toothed margins, and arranged in opposite. The dark rose pink to pale rose pink flowers bloom at the terminal branches from May to June. The corolla is two labiate, the upper lip is bilobate and the lower lip is trilobate. The lower lips has orange netted patches on the inside.
