ビグネイ (南洋五味子)

マレー半島からインドが原産です。高さは６メートルくらいになります。葉は大きくて、濃緑色の楕円形で光沢があり、互生します。小さな花は花弁がなく、枝の先や葉腋の花序に咲かせます。雌雄異株ですが、ふつうには雌株だけでも果実をつけます。果実は球形または卵形で、赤紫色に熟し、ジャムやゼリーそれにワインなどに加工されます。別名で「なんようごみし（南洋五味子）」とも呼ばれます。 |

トウダイグサ科ヤマヒハツ属の常緑低木で、学名は Antidesma bunius。英名は Bignay、Bignai。 |

The bignay (Antidesma bunius) belongs to Euphorbiaceae (the Spurge family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to the Malay Peninsula and India. This tree can reach about 6 m in height. Leaves are large, dark green, elliptic, glossy and alternate. Small non-petaled flowers come on the tips of twig and axils. This tree is dioecious, though the female plant usually can bear fruits by itself. Fruits are round to ovate and ripen magenta. They are processed to jam, jelly, wine and so on. |
