ヨーロッパから西アジアが原産です。家畜の飼料や緑肥として、広く栽培されています。高さは３０〜９０センチになります。丸い茎には、白い開出毛と明瞭な稜があります。葉は偶数羽状複葉で、８〜１２対の長楕円形や長楕円状披針形、線形などの小葉がつき、先端には巻きひげがあります。５月から８月ごろ、葉腋に、細長くて花が片側につく、長さ１５センチほどの総状花序をつけます。花はピンク色から青ふじ色の蝶形花で、５個の花弁と毛のある萼からなっています。花後、数粒の丸い種子の入った、片側が平たい豆果をつけます。

マメ科ソラマメ属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Vicia villosa。英名は Hairy vetch、Winter vetch。

The hairy vetch (Vicia villosa) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is native to Europe and western Asia. It is grown widely as a livestock feed or green manure. This herb can reach 30-90 cm in height. The round stems have spreading white hairs and conspicuous ridges. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound with 8-12 pairs of oblong, oblong-lanceolate, or linear leaflets, and a terminal tendril. The slender and one-sided racemes up to 15 cm long are borne at the leaf axils from May to August. The flowers are pink to blue-violet, papilionacenous and consisting of five petals and a hairy calyx. After flowering, it produces flat-sided seedpods that contain several round seeds.
