英名は Common mullein、Great mullein。
The Common mullein (Verbascum thapsus) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a biennial herb that is native to Europe and Siberia. This herb was introduced into Japan as an ornamental plant in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). It is naturalized in so many places nowadays, and can be found at streambanks or waste places. This herb can reach 1-2 m in height and covered with grayish-white velvety hairs. The basal leaves are large oblong and the cauline leaves are smaller. The racemes are borne and bloom yellow flowers from June to September. The Japanese name "毛蕊花" (mouzuika) comes from the blue-purple hairs on the stamens.
