インドから東南アジアのマレー半島に分布しています。単幹性で高さは２０メートルほどになります。葉は大きな羽状複葉で、茎頂にまとまってつきます。茎の上部に花序をだし、芳香のある小さな黄色い花を咲かせます。果実は楕円形の核果です。若芽や若い花柄は食用にされます。また果実は薄切りにして乾燥させ、石灰の粒とともにコショウ科の「キンマ（Piperaceae porphyrophyllum）」の葉に包んで、噛む嗜好品として利用されます。

ヤシ科ビンロウ属の常緑高木で、学名は Areca catechu。英名は Betel-nut palm、Pinang。

The betel-nut palm (Areca catechu) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is disrtibuted from India to the Malay Peninsula. This palm is a single trunk and can reach about 20 m in height. The leaves are large pinnate compound and clustered at the stem apices. The flowering clusters are borne on the upper stem and bloom scented small yellow flowers. The fruits are elliptic drupes. The young shoots and young peduncles are used for food. The fruits have been used for chewing, a few dried slices of the nut are wrapped in a Betel leaf along with granular lime.
