わが国の本州、中部地方から関東地方に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の岩礫地に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。茎は数本叢生し、葉は披針形から狭披針形で対生します。７月から９月ごろ、枝先で分枝して、紅紫色の花を咲かせます。花弁の先端は２浅裂します。長い花柄があり、萼は円筒状です。和名の由来は不明。

ナデシコ科マンテマ属の多年草で、学名は Silene keiskei var. minor。英名はありません。

"Biranji" (Silene keiskei var. minor) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Chubu regions to Kanto region of Japan. It grows in rocky and gravelly areas in mountainous to subalpine zones and grows 10 to 30 cm tall. It grows in clusters of several stems, and its leaves are lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate and arranged in pairs. The tips of the petals have two shallow lobes. There is a long petiole and the calyx is cylindrical. The origin of its Japanese name is unknown.
