The "Birou" (Livistona chinensis var. subglobosa) belongs to Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southern Shikoku, Kyushu, the Okinawa Islands of Japan, Taiwan and southern China. This tree grows in coastwise groves and can reach 10-15 m in height. The leaves are round, about 1 m acroos and divided into clefts to partites palmately. The segments are divided into clefts further and bend at the tips. The panicles are borne at the base of petioles and the yellowish-white, small, numerous bisexual flowers bloom from April to May. The fruits are elliptic drupes and ripen in bluish-black. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "蒲葵", and "蒲葵" (pu kui) in Chinese.
