The "Biroudo-shida" (Pyrrosia linearifolia) belongs to the family Polypodiaceae. It is an evergreen perennial fern that is found throughout Japan, as well as in Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, and Jilin Province in China. It is found in limestone and paleosol areas and grows on rocks and tree trunks. The long creeping rhizome is covered with reddish-brown scales. The leaves are linear and densely covered with stellate hairs. The Japanese name for this plant is derived from the fact that the hairy leaves look like velvet. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "絨毛石葦", and "線葉石韋" (xian ye shi wei) in Chinese.
