The Chilean hard fern (Blechnum cordatum) belongs to the Blechnaceae family. It is an evergreen perennial fern that is distributed mainly in Chile in South America, as well as in the Juan Fernandez Islands and Argentina. It grows on damp rocky areas and in crevices in mountain rocks, reaching a height of 90 to 150 cm. It is a dimorphic fern with both fertile and sterile leaves. The fronds are pinnate, erect, dark green, and glossy. The stipe is half the length of the entire frond and is covered with scales. New fronds are bronze to salmon-colored, eventually turning green. This plant has gained the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.
