カナダのオンタリオ州からアメリカの東・中部に分布しています。川沿いや混合樹林のなかなどに生え、高さは２１〜２７メートルになります。樹皮は褐色で、ダイアモンド原石のようなかたちに深く割れ目が入ります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、卵状披針形の小葉が５〜１２対つきます。春、枝先に雄花序と雌花序をつけます。果実は直径４〜６センチほどの核果で、夏の終わりから秋に熟します。なかの仁（じん）は食用になりますが、抜き出すのが困難です。和名では「くろぐるみ（黒胡桃）」と呼ばれます。

クルミ科クルミ属の落葉高木で、学名は Juglans nigra。英名は Black walnut。

The Black walnut (Juglans nigra) belongs to Juglandaceae (the Walnut family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native from Ontario to the eastern and central United States. This tree grows along streams or in mixed forests, and can reach 21-27 m in height. The bark is brown and has deep cracks in the form of rough diamonds. The leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 5-12 pairs of ovate-lanceolate leaflets. The male flowers and female flowers bloom at the terminal branches in spring. The fruit is drupe, 4-6 cm in diameter, and ripen in late summer to fall. The kernels are edible but hard to extract.
