アメリカの西部からメキシコの北西部に分布しています。開けた森林から低木林、草原などに生え、高さは４５～６０センチになります。繊維状の外皮を持つ球茎から、線形から狭披針形の葉を２～３個だします。葉にはふつう、縦に目立つ折り目があります。３月から５月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして散形花序をだし、青色からピンク色がかった紫色、ときには白色のラッパ状の花を２～１６個咲かせます。個々の花は、３個の花弁と３個の萼片からなっています。果実は３個の部屋をもつ蒴果です。

ユリ科ディプテロステモン属の多年草で、学名は Dipterostemon capitatus。英名は Blue dicks、Wild hyacinth。

The Blue dicks (Dipterostemon capitatus) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the western part of the United States to north-western Mexico. It grows in open forests, shrublands and grasslands and is 45-60 cm tall. It produces two to three linear to narrowly lanceolate leaves from a corm with fibrous outer barks. Leaves usually have a prominent vertical fold. From March to May, the scape grows into an umbel with 2-16 blue to pinkish-purple, sometimes white, trumpet-shaped flowers. Each individual flower consists of three petals and three sepals. The fruit is a capsule with three chambers.
