The "Botan-kinbai" (Trollius altaicus ssp. pulcher) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Rishiri Island in Hokkaido, Japan. It grows in alpine meadows and along snowfields at elevations of 1200 m or higher on Mount Rishiri, reaching a height of 20 to 60 cm. The leaves are circular-shaped and deeply three-lobed, with the lobes pinnately incised. From around July to August, it extends a flower stalk and produces orange-tinged yellow flowers. The reddish-purple pistil in the center of the flower serves as a signal to attract insects.
