メキシコ北西部の乾燥地帯に分布しています。丘陵の岩礫地や沖積平野に生え、高さは２０メートルにもなります。幹は多肉で、基部では直径５０センチほどもあり、キャンドルのように上部にいくほど細くなります。幹からは、鉛筆のように細い枝がでて、落葉性の葉がついています。７月から８月ごろ、茎の先に黄色い筒状花を咲かせます。寿命は１００〜３００年もあるそうです。

フォウクィエリア科フォウクィエリア属の落葉高木で、学名は Fouquieria columnaris（syn. Idria columnaris）。英名は Boojum tree、 Cirio。

The boojum tree (Fouquieria columnaris) belongs to the Fouquieriaceae family. It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed in the arid areas of northwest Mexico. This tree grows on the rocky slopes and alluvial planes and can reach about 20 m in height. The stem is succulent, resembles a upside-down candle, and about 50 cm in diameter at base with pencil-like twigs and deciduous leaves. Yellow tubular flowers come on the terminal twigs from June to August. Boojum tree is long-lived for 100-300 years.
