Pistia stratiotes

The Water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is widely distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics. Its Japanese name comes from its leaves, which look like "botan" (peony) flowers. It is a floating aquatic plant and produces small flowers surrounded by white spathe bracts in summer. In Japan, the abnormal proliferation of "Water lettuce" has been observed in rivers and swamp ponds in recent years, and there are concerns about its impact on the ecosystem.
