"Botan-zuru" (Clematis apiifolia) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a deciduous woody vine that is native to Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This vine grows in sunny fields, roadsides and forest edges. The leaves are trifoliate with petioles, and arranged in opposite. The short panicles are borne in the terminal stems and axils, and the white flowers bloom from August to September. The four sepals are petaloid. Following bloom, the convoluted fruit-clusters will be borne. The Japanese name is because the shape of the leaves resembles "peony".
