The Castlepoint daisy (Brachyglottis compacta) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an evergreen shrub that is an endemic species of New Zealand's North Island. It grows on limestone cliffs, branches profusely, and reaches a height of 60 to 120 cm. The leaves are obovate or ovate with rounded tips, and the larger lower leaves often have wavy margins. Young stems, leaf undersides, and peduncles are all covered in dense, pure white wooly hair. In New Zealand, from January to February, it produces 3 to 10 racemes at the stem tips, bearing bright yellow flower heads. The fruit is a linear-oblong achene, and the seeds have pappus.
